Why Organic Matters in the Glass

Conventional wine and spirits can carry residues from synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides used in the vineyard or during production. Organic certification means the grapes and grains are grown without those inputs — and in the case of biodynamic farming, the entire ecosystem of the farm is managed as a living system.

Organic wines also tend to be lower in added sulfites, which many people find easier on the body. That doesn't mean they're sulfite-free — sulfites occur naturally in fermentation — but certified organic producers are held to strict limits on any additions.

Our picks are sourced through Organic Wine Exchange, a curated retailer specializing exclusively in certified organic and biodynamic bottles. Every purchase through our affiliate link supports this site at no extra cost to you.

How to Read an Organic Wine Label

USDA Organic

The grapes were grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Wines labeled 'Made with Organic Grapes' meet this standard but may have higher sulfite additions.

Biodynamic Certified

Goes beyond organic — the farm is managed as a self-sustaining ecosystem using Demeter or Biodyvin certification. Often produces wines with exceptional terroir expression.

Sulfite-Conscious

Certified organic wines in the US must contain fewer than 100 ppm of added sulfites. 'No added sulfites' means only naturally occurring sulfites from fermentation are present.

Natural Wine

Not a legal certification, but a philosophy: minimal intervention in the vineyard and cellar. Many natural wines are also organic or biodynamic, but not all certified organic wines are 'natural.'
